Profile
There isn’t a great deal of information about Aulton on the internet, barring a few details on various auction websites. She was born in 1871 in Hereford. The daughter of a farmer, much of her work is from 1920-1935. She passed away in 1962.
Aulton’s work is primarily architectural scenes, including castles, streets, and courtyards. Many settings are from the Midlands, not surprising considering she lived at several addresses in Birmingham in her lifetime. In addition though, she has some beautiful scenes from Europe, including Belgium, Italy, and France.
Margaret Aulton is particularly notable for etching and a variant known as aquatint. Etching is interesting because the artist marks the surface of a plate with a needle to create the lines for their art. Once finished, ink is applied and wiped, leaving it just in the marks. A run through a print press transfers the ink to paper, creating the artwork.
Aquatint is a slight variation of etching. Instead of a needle, the artist uses an acid (resin). It creates sunken areas in the plate. It is a fantastic way to create tonal effects. Then, the process of inking and printing on paper is the same. Some artists, including Aulton, effectively combine etching and aquatint to create clean lines and tone.
