Painter, etcher, lithographer and woodcut artist. Born Bruges. Came to England at 15. Studied under William Morris and went to work in his studio. After 3 years decided to travel and went to sea. Came back and settled in London. RE in 1907; RWS in 1917 & full RA in 1919.
Knighted in 1941.
