History
Soper was born in 1870 in Middlesex. He went to boarding school in Ramsgate, Kent, before spending time in the army and the navy. However, his real love was art. He had his first exhibition at the Royal Academy at just 19 years old.
Notably, Soper began a job as an illustrator, even though he had no formal training. Engraver and painter Sir Frank Short saw his ability and began tutoring him in 1902. Ultimately, Soper got a fantastic reputation for his impressive range of skills, including etching, wood cutting, watercolour, and illustration.
Real passion
George Soper has a really impressive collection of work. It includes illustrations in some iconic works of fiction, including Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Grimm’s Fairy Tales.
A lot of Soper’s work captures rural life, celebrating the people living off the land. This includes farmers, labourers, shepherds, and fishermen. He saw many of these trades slowly disappearing, replaced by machines. So, he set to preserving them in his art. He even spent time with workers as they did their various daily jobs. His work captures the essence of life, including the amazing relationships between workers and their animals, specifically working horses.
Soper’s work provides an amazing look at the British countryside and the people living and working there. Incredibly, his ability to express movement captures the moments perfectly. You can look at them and see exactly how life was.
